There is an age old argument that human beings are not “meant” to be monogamous and that they are in fact genetically disposed to have multiple partners. Just because humans are capable of monogamy, and less than 5% of all species of mammal actually are, it doesn’t mean that they should be.
We humans seem to be proving this theory. Not so long ago there was the “alarming” statistic that a third of all marriages end in divorce (cheating spouse). In the last few years this has climbed to almost 50%.
Men do tend to get the blame as “gene spreaders” for being the most likely to cheat. It is said that in evolutionary terms that males feel a greater need to reproduce with multiple females to better the chances of the species surviving. However recent theories give both men and women equal footing in the promiscuity stakes. They theorise that both men and women have very similar sexual tendencies to primates, as that is where we evolved from, and given that only about 6% of primates remain faithful, it is unlikely that we will either.
So if all this evidence points towards polygamy, why does monogamy mean so much to us as humans? Maybe the thinking is that if there are two people in a committed, monogamous relationship, it is easier to protect any offspring and therefore ensure the survival of the species.
Greeks and Romans pretty much did away with monogamy, and even as late as mediaeval times and the Renaissance Marriage wasn’t really that popular. Monogamy is only a relatively recent concept in the grand scheme of things and really only became popular and the “done thing” in the last few hundred years, mainly due to the Victorians, as the ideal way to raise a family.
How to catch a cheating spouse

Apparently men who have a have a longer ring finger than index finger are more likely to cheat on their wives and girlfriends.
